How Mental Illness Derailed the Career of a Promising Young Skateboarder

Paul Alexander was a young British skateboarder full of charisma and drive. He discovered the opportunities of sponsorship, travelling and recognition during a move from Leicester to Bristol in his late teens. Living with professional skateboarder Danny Wainwright he became engulfed in the fun, responsibility free lifestyle that came with his chosen pursuit of becoming a pro skateboarder. Paul seemed destined for success then something came to get him, something he’d never experienced before that would take his personal goals and freedom far away from his grasp in a seemingly never ending battle. This is his story, directed by friend and skateboarding companion Tim Crawley.

Drove down to freedom skate park in Medford, New Jersey just the big boy and myself and we were planning to meet up with Jared. The day started off with big boy playing his Didgerieoo in the parking lot and singing a song about a beautiful summer day here in May! Next we started to make our way to the skate park and big boy no only had his BMX bike but also his skateboard. It was really windy outside one of the windiest days we ever rode a skate park not only does make it hard to film but it makes it very dangerous to ride your bike, but that didn’t scare big boy from getting a flair challenge in straight away! Text of big boy jumped on his skateboard and decided to give that a try and he actually learned a new trick have to do a board slide on the skateboard! Finally Jared joined us he rolled into the skate park parking lot with his Mazda speed 3 that has 300 wheel horsepower! Jared got straight to work by doing crazy technical tricks that only Jared can do! Next up I challenged big boy to try a backflip out of the concrete bowl and he was terrified but eventually he tried it and got it! He also got redemption on me bunny hop over the wooden railing that he crashed on the first time we came to this skate park! After the boys were done riding Jared to big boy for a ride in his Mazda to show big boy how fast it is! Big boy loved it! We had so much fun riding the skate park and we are definitely coming back this summer!

Jon Reyes- Riding with POLICE *NYPD*

This spot was so sick but LOADED WITH COPS! In motion for purchasing the new GH5 Camera. The camera is currently out of stock so I have to wait a little bit to get it. Ended up at a spot that was surrounded by cops! For some reason they walked by every time as if they did’t even see me ride!

Words by Ed Pollio:

When I was 10 years old my step father was a cab driver for Wadsworth Cab Service.
I would go with him as he drove the cab around Staten Island picking up passengers.
Once every week my step father drove a man to NYC who worked at Webster Hall.  During each trip
I would overhear crazy stories based around this mysterious place.  Every week the man would come back with a new, wild story about something that had happened there.  The man and my step father spoke like 2 adults would normally speak to each other, barely acknowledging how bizarre the stories were.  As a little boy, this made me both amazed and terrified.  As soon as I could go to a show at Webster, I would.
Years later I finally got to see my first show there, which was Atmosphere.  Being able to attend a concert at a venue where both my parents spent some of their childhood was awesome, but almost weird at the same time.  It was great knowing some history before ever being at the venue.
If you would have told me back then that one day I would be building a skatepark in the illustrious Webster Hall, I would have told you that you were insane.  However, Zumiez made the project a reality for us.
Here is a video below of my great team working along with the amazing crew at Webster Hall building the #skateloftnyc for Zumiez and Addias. Thanks to Joe Fontaine and Christian Villacres for hiring us and adding to my amazing memories at Webster Hall.  One day I hope my children can enjoy Webster Hall as me and my parents have.
