Board Games: Where to Get Schooled & Stoked About Skateboarding
Oliver Percovich first skated in an empty pool at the age of six, while growing up in Papua New Guinea. In 2007 Oliver moved to Afghanistan from Australia when his girlfriend took a job in Kabul.
Bored, he would skate the beleaguered city, and became a sort of pied half-piper, attracting street kids that would follow him around and ask for rides. Shortly after, Oliver founded Skateistan, a grassroots ‘Sport for Development’ project on the streets of Kabul.
Today, Skateistan is now an award-winning international organisation with projects in Afghanistan, Cambodia and South Africa. The organisation is the first international development initiative to combine skateboarding with educational outcomes. Skateistan is non-political, independent, and inclusive of all ethnicities, religions and social backgrounds, offering both skating and general education classes for over 1000 boys and girls each week.
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. “When you go fast enough, you forget what your boss told you last night!”

The Cinder Cone from Farm League on Vimeo.
In the Spring of 2014 a small group of close friends broke ground on a building project in Skamania County, Washington in the Columbia River Gorge. Their primary endeavor was a multi-platform tree house, but also included a skate bowl and a wood fired soaking tub as well. The crew came from all over the country and from a variety of backgrounds. Some were professional carpenters, others learned on the job, gaining experience along the way. The Cinder Cone is Foster Huntington’s short film that documents this year-long process of building his dream home with this community of tight knit friends.

Who woulda thought that nestled between the Stapleton Houses and the bleak waterfront of Staten Island would be New York City’s best indoor DIY skatepark? Not us so we trooped out to Shaolin to see 5050 Skatepark for ourselves. It turns out it’s true! But it won’t last for long so do yourself a favor and get there while you can. #SupportLocal on dose!
